Can you tell me what these letters are? Supposedly they are the chinese letters m.a.w, intials not a word but I don't believe that's what they are. Thank you very much for your help.

This is hilarious! Not only was the guy a sucker for the gibberish font, but he didn't even get the "right" letters according to the bogus code. Instead of M.A.W., he got M.E.Z.!

Since the bogus "code" is completely arbitrary without any connection to anything outside itself, one random character is as good as any other random character. Perhaps the tattooist knew that, and just randomly picked three (or perhaps picked them based on looks?), but that's probably crediting them with too much cleverness. Considering how big a sucker one has to be to think that "chinese letters m.a.w." actually means anything, the rest is fairly inconsequential though.

ReplyDelete@ Jellyfish: I really, really don't get why people don't understand that. You'd think that a few moments thought would make it obvious. There really should be a disclaimer on this site now, something like, "If you got tattoos that you think are 'initials' or 'letters' in Chinese, you didn't. You have nonsense written on your body. Also: you're an idiot."
ReplyDeleteI think the solution is to come up with a font for Roman characters (font name: "Chinese") that looks like Chinese characters to the ignorant. That way tattooists can honestly say, "Those are the letters m, a, w in 'Chinese.' " The added benefit is that any English speakers will be able to figure out what letters they are by simply looking at them.
