The young lady bearing this tattoo by Juan at Starlight Tattoo in Belleville, NJ, probably thought no one would ever guess what the two characters meant.

The top character 操 normally means “conduct, run, control, manage”, but in Chinese slang, it is the equivalent of “fuck”. The bottom character appears to be a botched 妳 (你), which means “you”.
It must be nice to express one’s angst via a foreign language, unfortunately she is one ultimately got “fucked”.
should it be 妳?
ReplyDeletePoor, poor girl... I wonder what she thought she got done...
ReplyDeleteActually, I assume that she thought it'd be cool to get "Fuck you" tattooed on her. Especially when someone asks her what her tattoo means.
ReplyDeleteAnd when that gets old or she matures or changes her attitude or doesn't like it anymore, she can always tell people that it means something else. At least thats why I think a lot of people get chinese or japanese characters tattooed on them, they have no comprehension that these "symbols" are part of an actual form of communication somewhere else in the world.
botched kind of badly, too. saaad.
ReplyDeleteit's like the tattooist's hand slipped.
ReplyDeleteI can just imagine the story behind this:
ReplyDeleteGirl decides she wants an "Asian" tattoo. Girl heads to local college, hunts down one of the Chinese tutors, and explains how she wants a tattoo that says "Love and Peace" in Chinese. Tutor, sick of ignoramuses asking for this kind of thing and pissed off after a long days work, puts on a fake smile and agrees, writing down "Fuck you" in Chinese, but telling her this is what she wants. She then takes it to Random J. Tattooist, who knows no Chinese, and proceeds to copy the writing, badly. And so, for her ignorance and Oriental fetish, girl gets to walk around for a few years with "Fuck you" on her neck.
this is the tatto with the worst meaning i've ever seen in hanzi smatter, it will be hard to beat this "record"
ReplyDeleteIf 妳 is what she said, therefore she's saying: f- you! to a woman (or some) she has nothing to do with men...maybe some girl took his boyfriend. The thing is if you combine f- and you in Chinese, does it have the same meaning or, does it mean nothing at all.
ReplyDeleteThe zhongwen.com website is really usefful on that matter. I found the info about 妳 character through there.
I'm not sure this one is as bad as the "crazy diarrhea" one. At least this one has angst, if she meant it. But yeah, that extra long stroke on the 妳 looks like someone slipped!
ReplyDeleteThe typos are getting more severe everyday...I gotta take more sleep.
ReplyDeleteQuote: she has nothing to do with men...maybe some girl took his boyfriend.
That of course will be her
sorry
I agree with anon 2:21. My first thought was that this chick knows exactly what the tat means. "Fuck you" is directed at the reader, not at the wearer, so the she-was-tricked explanation doesn't really work.
ReplyDeletewhy would anyone want to have THAT tatooed?
ReplyDeleteSeems like it's perfectly possible that she had this done on purpose, in which case it may be fair to call into question her taste, but not necessarily her understanding of Chinese.
